I love how Cynthia Hickey takes historical facts and spins them into a beautiful story. Tabitha McClelland has not had a happy childhood or life, she has a distrust of men based on what she witnessed growing up in her own family. She is determined to work and make her own way when she accepts a job as a Harvey House waitress and is located in Topeka, Kansas. Adam Foster is a chef and along with his family, dreams of someday owning their own restaurant in San Francisco, California. I have read several books from this author and have not been disappointed. These are very clean, well thought out books. NO SMUT WHATSOEVER. This is a sweet story with just the right amount of trouble to keep it interesting. I enjoyed it and think you will too.
This was a sweet story of Harvey Girl, Tabitha, and the chef she falls in love with, Adam. She doesn't believe there are any good men in the world because her father was a two timing scoundrel.
Harvey Restaurants were along the railroad depots to serve railroad travelers. The story is about working in the Harvey Restaurant. At a time when women were beginning to work at jobs, rules were strict and the workdays were long. There is some romance, but most of the story is about the struggle for advancement and achieving the top position. A nice story worth the time to read.
The best way for me to enjoy history is to add some fictional flair! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. History is a bit of a bore but I retain it more when set in a story such as this. I have never heard of the Harvey girls before so it was very interesting to me to see how women were being introduced into the work force. Of course the great romance story added in was a bonus as well as being a christian read. Look forward to reading more by this author!
It is a story about the Santa Fe Railroad's Harvey Houses. I have two personal connections so I was interested in reading it. My Father learned to cook at a Harvey House in Lamy, New Mexico, one summer while he was in college. His father (my grandfather) was an engineer on the Santa Fe Railroad. His last route was from Denver CO to Dodge City, KS. It was a charming little story about the history of the Harvey Houses, how they came to be established and how the Harvey Girls were trained. The author wrapped it up in a romance with a Harvey Chef along with their faith in God. Anyone who enjoys happy endings will enjoy this read!
Tabitha McClelland had seen what her unfaithful, drunken father had done to her mother, and she decided to trust no man. She becomes a Harvey Girl hoping to establish a career. However, she hadn’t foreseen the problems along the way, especially one man that was hard to ignore.
Adam Forster has lost one wife, and he never wants to go through that heartache again. He just wants to cook for the Harvey House Restaurant until he has enough money to move his family to California to open up their own restaurant. However, one petite waitress is having a huge effect on his heart. But will she ever be able to see that he would never hurt her?
I begin this book with some reservations. I have read too many novels about Harvey Girls, and they all have the same elements. However, this story grew on me, especially after the head waitress softened a bit. There were a few things that almost sounded too modern for 1876, like “the fellowship hall” of a church and turning the stove down. It was also a little slow in places, but overall it was an interesting story that I really enjoyed
I assume you have read the general storyline description. Research is evident in this clean, Christian, historical romance. Although I had heard of the term 'Harvey Girls', I had no idea of what it entailed. This is a sweet romance with a nice emotional payoff. The Christian thread is light. There are a few editing errors but not to the point of being distracting. Characters are lifelike with realistic personalities and reactions. The movement of time isn't always smooth but at no time do you lose track of the story essentials. It really is a wonderful story, both in historic significance and as a love story. It's a complete, stand alone novel with a satisfying ending. I recommend this book.
