I'm being nice with the three stars. If two stands for "I didn't like it" and three is "I liked it", this should be two and a half for "I didn't like it but I can see potential."There's no telling how long the sample pages of this book were sitting on my Kindle. I finally needed something new and tried them. The first few paragraphs managed to make me dislike the hero, but they also hooked me into wanting to know about his life after tragedy and how he managed being a real psychic giving fake readings in a carnival. Admittedly, this type of story might not be for me. I enjoy all different flavors of speculative fiction, but usually whatever else is happening, I like adventure in my stories and there was none here. Taste aside, though, the hero's reaction to his client in the opening gave me an instant dislike that wasn't washed away as his tragic past was revealed. The abused heroine was unbelievable. The villain seemed accidentally effeminate--as in there's nothing wrong with having an effeminate character, but it *seemed* like the author wanted to give us an artistic Hannibal Lector, but actually gave us Mommy Dearest in drag. Also, the lapses in reality that allow the darkness of the story to take place are far harder to suspend belief for than psychic ability.
Why not one star? Because the raw story telling talent can be seen despite all that and the occasional typo. I'm interested in checking out later stories to see how the author has grown.
