I hate to say it, but this one is dull. The idea for the story had promise, but it just never went anywhere. There was very little action and no danger or suspense. In fact there wasn't really any anything. Lord Timothy Breckenridge (Caroline Sutcliff's first husband's illegitimate son from The Ideal Bride) makes a sweet good guy, *yawn*. Heather Cynster is supposed to be the Damsel in Distress, only she's never in any distress, even the romance took quite a long time to get moving. It's like The Story That Never Was.

It looks like the plot saviour for this Cynster Sisters batch is going to be a mysterious Highland Laird whose Mother's bent on revenge against the Cynster family for some as yet undisclosed reason. It's the only thing that kept me reading, and the reason I've given this 3 stars and not 1. Finding out what his story is will be what makes me to buy the next 2. I kind of like him. I hope he ends up a good guy, and his bitchy-poo mother falls in a peat bog.

In the last 8 or so books, her tendency to pick apart every thought and every movement in the love scenes in minute detail has become tedious. This one was a hard slog, my mind kept glazing over. I'm almost dreading the next one. Having said that, i'll still buy it. I won't be able to resist the bad guy!

The first book in the Cynster Sisters' Triology. Heather, the eldest sister, is somewhat of a rebel; she doesn't like to adhere to the ton's established rules of how to find her proper mate. She's also by the ton's opinion in a desperate situation by needing to find the right man for her in a realatively short period of time. So Heather sets out with her own rules to find her man, and takes all of us on the beginning of an adventure that engulfs the reader. Heather and Breckenridge are very funny and believable. The "Laird" is mysterious and frieghtening, but also gorgeous. Why the mystery with the "Laird". Can't wait for the next book.
This story and the writing are nauseatingly bad. Goes on forever! And ever! And ever! One of the many sexual encounters had to take up 3 chapters of the book. Her powerful and tightly knit family did not go after her and beat the kidnappers to a bloody pulp? They had to walk across Scotland? She wanted to stay with the villans? Geez this book is ridiculous and the writing is laughingly ridiculous. But hey, she's a Cynster! A very dumb Cynster. Breckenridge lost his balls as soon as he started running after her and the kidnappers. The page after page of stupidity went on forever!
I really really wanted to like this book. A few years ago, I feverishly worked through all of the earlier Cynster books, reading each and every one and enjoying them in different ways. Even though I loved some more than others, they all held my interest. Not so this Cynster tale, unfortunately. For me, there was not the usual attention to detail by this author that makes the blossoming of a romance credible -- no early "tells" in the story, but lots of the author telling the reader (rather than showing)...and [SPOILER ALERT]

a romance that once it gets going, cuts right to the chase -- no first kiss, no sensual build-up, just right to the finish line. Not a lot of witty dialog, and the story strains credibility (so many other smarter options for the h/h to have taken, as others point out....making the h/h -- and the relatives who seem to think they did the right thing -- appear one card short of a full deck). Finally, the over-use of incomplete sentences completely detracted and drove me absolutely nuts -- as if it somehow makes a statement more compelling and believable if the subject is omitted. Sorry, Ms. Laurens, you are so much better than this, and though the book does pick up a bit about 56% (per my !) of the way through (hence 3 stars and not lower), it just was forgettable and not a book I looked forward to picking up to continue. Read it if you are a die-hard Cynster fan, but don't have high expectations. Yes, I am sorry, too.
Like many others, I have been reduced to skimming thru most of the exceedingly repetitious love scenes and nonsensical banter between the H/H. And. Don't get me. Started with the broken sentences. I realize Laurens is trying to create a certain impact with this tactic but it is insanely frustrating and does not permit the reader to follow the flow of the scene. "Fractured" seems to be one of her favorite words and it applies to the writing style in those scenes. Unfortunately (for us as readers) she is capitalizing on the popularity of the Cynster series but, the last 10 or more books are re-treads of the earlier books that first introduced us to this family. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is fed up with these females who -- for some completely unknown/irrational reasons -- are adamantly opposed to marriage. All of the "rakes" seem to suddenly and completely fall head over heels AND determine that they will marry this woman no matter what! We're supposed to believe that they are sexy, smart, polished, secure with their lot in life, yet nearly every leading man ends up doing/saying the things most certain to irritate the leading lady. Is it some twisted way of Laurens trying to rebel by crushing the previous notion that women are the weaker sex in need of protection and coddling? Well, maybe a wimpy and wishy-washy female isn't the best portrayal but some of her leading ladies are downright unlikeable because of their "not" falling for the handsome, virile hero. Would that somehow paint the women as shallow? Will we not admire her?

Where was I ??? Yes, the "retread." The formula for most of her recent novels is the same. Insert a different name, slightly different circumstances, toss in the bad guys, have the smart and independent woman end up in ludicrous situations where she needs to be rescued and then the sudden dawning that "I can't live without this man by my side, being my equal partner" not by "his" side being his partner. She just keeps cranking them out yearly and we keep spending money buying and reading them. Guilty as charged. Why? Because, when she's not writing fractured sentences and using the same love story time and again, she is a talented story teller and she has successfully kept us interested in this family and we WANT to see how the leaves on the branches of the extended family tree end up. I still think she was in her heyday with the original Cynster cousins series. Now the new books are poorly fleshed out with "honorable mention" of the past characters and/or minor supporting roles to keep you interested.

As far as this trilogy goes, it should have been one volume with the three sisters' stories included as Parts 1, 2 & 3. Much of the useless scenes could be cut down and moved along more efficiently. I knew from the get-go that the Laird is going to end up with Angelica (will be HIGHLY surprised if I'm incorrect) but Ms Laurens is clever enough to keep you intrigued with the "evil mother" and why she's blackmailing her son (if he is truly her son) into these hare-brained schemes to "ruin" one of the Cynster sisters; hence the dragged out versions we are forced to read. This could have been one plump book with the three stories included and a great big happy ending (as you know it will be.

I haven't read the second book yet but will be doing so soon. From others' reviews, it appears it may be an improvement over this one.... but I'm already dreading the 'map reading' scenes and the predictable love scenes..... honestly... who really doesn't want to read the juicy parts??? In this author's case ME! Initially, I really enjoyed Ms Laurens knack for telling a good story with characters that I could very easily envision in my mind... including the secondary characters who often added a good bit to the stories.... her love scenes (in earlier books) were hot & spicy without being vulgar and the romance evolved over the course of the book. The heroines grew to love the hero and the story took some time to unfold...... unlike the two week romance where the H/H meet, hate, fornicate, become enlightened then fall into death-do-us-part love -- yeah, right.....

I would LOVE to see a fresh story line and a throwback to her earlier writing style. I guess I'll continue to buy the books because I do love to read as it provides an escape from the rat race of everyday life. I'd hate to cross her off my 'go to' list of authors but something has to change.

I gave this story 3 stars due to some of the intrigue (I think the Laird is gonna be a hottie), the fact that there are some good stretches of writing and the inclusion of "supporting characters" from past books. That made the book bearable. I didn't really think I got to "know" Breckenridge or Heather as they simply were not developed enough. Actually, 2.5 stars would be a more accurate rating but not an option.

p.s. I have to say that Richard/Scandal was one of my faves from the original series (which was my first Laurens book and is still a scorching romance) but even in that book, the "Lady" & the "Vale" angle threw me. But it totally made sense for Breckenridge/Heather to seek haven with them since they live in Scotland. Lastly, I didn't seem to read much supporting evidence that Breckenridge was a legendary rake. Seemed pretty tame to me.
